General Joe Talk / MOC cards poster(s)
« on: August 21, 2013, 09:28:18 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I'm probably late here, but I just discovered: http://www.3djoes.com/merch.html

Along with 360 video of GI Joe figs, this guy is printing poster featuring every GI Joe figure from 1982-1989 and is working on another project featuring every figure from 1990-1994. While the first available poster looks very nice, I'm making a poll here to help him about his MOC fig poster. As you can see below, there are two options (basically with or without Tomax & Xamot 2-pack):

Option 1: 24" x 36" poster features every single carded figure from 1982-1985. The Tomax & Xamot two-pack is not included

Option 2:
Two (2) 24" x 36" posters feature every carded figure from 1982-1985 as well as the Tomax & Xamot two-pack

Additional information:
  • From what I understand, cost is about $20/poster (so $20 for option #1 and $40 for option #2) and shipping to Canada is $14  :)
  • Price tag on cards would be photoshop out
Which one would you like the most?

General Joe Talk / Do you know shelf life?
« on: July 17, 2013, 08:10:42 PM »
Hello,

I'm discovering http://www.shelflife.net/a-real-american-hero

For the vintage era, it has 1982 to 1985. Like Yojoe did, you can keep track of what you have, what you want and what you have for sale.

Have you tried it? Do you know it? Is it good?

Hello everyone,

November 19, 2012 I posted here about a new Kickstarter project. Falcone (a Yojoe board member) was planning making Shooter, a black female character Hasbro never made. Also, to reduce is development cost he was also planning making few more female troopers out of the same mold. The beauty of this project was to make them factory quality (in China) in the o-ring vintage format. Each fig was $10 and shipping was $1 extra for non-US resident. Eight months later, I now have five of these figs in hands. Why only five out of the 8 produced? First, I wasn't sure about quality. Second, I wasn't sure that project would be successful. We just have to think about the OSC project  ::) . Anyway, lets review these:

Family picture:

Originality of the idea: 10/10  ;D
For sure, this idea is 100% original. And, making these in the o-ring format is great news!

Paint quality: 10/10  ;D
I have to say, the paint application is really well done (factory done). Face are really well painted with eyes on the spot. Colours are also a great idea: Arctic theme, Shadow (Black), Action force (Quarrel), etc.

Variety: 9/10  ;D
White skin, black skin, brunette, blond, red head, etc. You will fill all your fantasies  ;) . Also, each fig come with two heads: With and without helmet. More variations could have been done (short sleeves, different torso, different head), but for a first project this is more than we could expect.

Articulations: 8/10  :)
You will find about the same articulations than the regular vintage GI Joe (swivel arms, shoulders, knees, waist). Except this is not a ball joint head. So, this figure will only turn is head left-right. A ball joint head would have give this fig the two missing points out of 10... In addition, but not necessary, this fig has swivel wrist. This give her better grip on accessories, but wasn't a must have. Finally, joints are tights and legs are standing right (without any spring that spread them apart).

Part compatibility: 7/10
No feet holes: this a not a major issue since the fig stand really well alone. Also, the back hole is too large to put a backpack. This a not a major issue either since we can put filler (like hold-it) to make a backpack feel tighter in her back. Right now, I didn't try to unassemble her to see if I can take her arms, legs, torso to fit on another figs (see below why).

Overall look: 3/10  >:( >:( :'(
I have to say, this a the major disappointment for me. The first thing you would think when someone make a vintage o-ring fig is that fig will be compatible with o-ring size fig. But, it's not. These figs are really 4 inches size, not 3 and 3/4 inches size. A picture will say everything:

These figs are more size compatible with new 25th anniversary fig, but... why? Still a mystery for me. They were not sold as 4 inches figs (while they are now sold as 4'' on Falcone's website) and the word vintage was use when talking about Shooter, Amber, etc. That's a big turn off for me. And, each part is taller: legs, torso, arms, etc. So, this is not a problem with 1 part. The fig itself is proportional with itself.

Also, arms are a little bit skinny and her waist too big. These mistakes can be tolerable since we talk about a single individual making all of this. But the size difference is... too big!!

Accessories: 1/10  >:(
Each fig comes with an unusable and useless weapon. I didn't even picture it. It's already in the garbage can. When stores like Marauder already exist, I don't even see the point for fans to compete one against others to do the same thing. The market is not really big and expertise, time and funding are rare. So, making a weapon was and still is a bad idea, IMHO.

Final conclusion:

By themselves, these look very well, very professional and a very good start for a one man project. For a $10 project fig, this is well done. But, displayed with other regular vintage GI Joe, these look off.

If you missed the original Kickstarter project and want one now, you may contact Falcone.

Do you like it? Will you buy one? Why?

Reviews Section / KRE-O GI Joe and Cobra
« on: June 25, 2013, 09:33:29 PM »
After a long wait, I got them so I can now make a little review:

From the Cobra side:

Best replica from the '80s: Cobra Commander! His face could have been grey, but no. It's Chrome!! Even better than our good old Cobra Commander.

Best surprise: Firefly. Very good idea to give him a bike. The fig looks very good and he has a lot of details on him to reproduce the original Firefly.

Best accessories: While the grenade that comes with the trooper is a cool idea, I will have to go with all the accessories that come with Red Ninja: Bow, sword, 2 stars! The dynamite that come with Firefly is also pretty cool.

The one you must have: Firefly. In fact, you must buy the Checkpoint Alpha. That's a no-brainer!

Most boring: Blue Trooper from Cobra Armored Assault tank. A regular Cobra Soldier would have been a better idea. That fig add nothing more.

Now from the GI Joe side:

Best replica from the '80s: While Stalker has a very well done camo and he has a very cute berret, I will have to go with Quick kick! He comes with the Fudgee Chocolate bar. I mean, that's a nice wink to the vintage TV show.

Best surprise: AT Commander. That piece of hair is really great. Strange at first, but still a really nice idea. Scarlett has also a great piece of hair (rubber), but it can't compare to the one of the AT Commander.

Best accessories: Torpedo. He has so much: Backpack, removable googles, fins x 2, gun, knife. Did I say removable googles? Just for those, I'm sold!!

The one you must have: Again, Torpedo. I have him in my o-ring collection. But not my favourite fig. In the KRE-O universe, that's a must have. He has great (and plenty) accessories. You can't go wrong. In fact, I bought multiple. I can now see a EELS from this mold. So, that is a great news.

Most boring: Snake Eyes... Yes, you read it write! Where is Timber!!! I mean, you can't make a SE v2 without Timber  ??? His visor is cool, but nothing extraordinary.

That's it for now.

I can't wait for wave 2 to hit Canada!!

Customs / Non Neon Sci-Fi :-)
« on: June 23, 2013, 04:46:34 PM »
I don't like neon colour. So, no Tiger Force, no Airtight, no Sci-Fi figs in my collection... until today :-) I put a 1986 Sci-Fi into Black Rit dye. I was expecting a more even result. But, at least, it's no more neon. Bottom line, it looks more like a camo green. And, the silver is still silver. I love it!

Before someone ask, I don't have a specific reason for Double Clutch's head... except that I had one in hands  ;)

Since I still have Sci-Fi's head, I might dremel it so I can give mine a removable helmet. But, that's another project!

General Joe Talk / Steel Brigade waist alternative?
« on: April 28, 2013, 06:54:15 PM »
Hello,

I'm looking for the Steel Brigade version 1A (Airborne torso) for awhile now. I now have the opportunity to get one with broken crotch. But, I don't see the day when I will be able to find a Steel Brigade crotch replacement.

So, don't you think Tan Clutch/Grunt waist would be an affordable alternative? Is it a good colour match? Spirit waist? Any other alternative (beside painting Gung Ho waist myself)?

Many thanks in advance!

Martin
