BAD NEWS for the card game
« on: March 09, 2005, 12:07:01 PM »

Got this email today, sorry if it's been mentioned before.
The line is now officially done.

Wizards of the Coast is continually evaluating all of its toy and game
products to ensure they meet our high standards of design and playability
and fulfill our commitments to the shareholders of Hasbro, Inc. We have been
thrilled to bring fans of the GI JOE vs. COBRA saga the excitement and
action of this classic storyline in the form of a collectible Trading Card
Game. Unfortunately, it was decided to conclude this product line with the
February release of the ARMORED STRIKE expansion. Despite our best efforts
to bring to market a fun, interactive, high quality game, demand was -
unfortunately - not at a level that allows us to continue to produce
additional expansion sets.
Wizards of the Coast had a great experience with GI JOE and will, of course,
continue to support players through our customer service department. We will
keep general product information on the Wizards of the Coast website for the
foreseeable future and anticipate the collectability of the fantastic GI JOE
TCG cards and game accessories to continue for years to come.

They ARE still soliciting for the Venom vs Valor wave however....  Odd.

Man do I feel strung along. It was confirmed that Valour vs Venom was coming out, they've taken orders for it, and orders are still open. But now WotC officially says the game is dead.

A lot of people are blaming distribution, but I think it's skeptical store owners that have made this game hard to find. The Quantum Ladies only brought the game in to sell to me, and it ended up being a sizeable money maker for them. Between the collector appeal, the almost 100% awesome card art, and the fantastic fun of the game, this game should have lasted at least the year. Is it really that big a risk to release Valour vs Venom?

I know licensing fees are expensive, and it doesn't make sense for Wizards to produce a game they are paying rights for when it doesn't sell as well as in-house ideas. But damn it, this is a good TCG. I'm not just buying it because I'm a fan of the product. I did that with Star Trek and Warhammer 40 000 TCGs, both of which have limited entertainment value. GI Joe is consistantly fun, fast, and interesting. The variety of decks that can be made around a theme or a game mechanical is immense, and it is GI Joe.

Just give me Valour vs Venom, guys. Is that too much to ask?

Hasbro owns WotC. There shouldn't be a licencing arangement required. If so it's completely internal to Hasbro.

If anyone sees Armored Strike on clearance somewhere, could you pick me up a few packs?

My 'distributor' has decided that since only I and about a nother dozen stores across Ontario want it, they're not carrying it - so I'm shit-outta-luck on it.

Which sucks - since I already had boxes sold.
