How do molds get lost or damaged?

This thread touches on your question

Thanks Pete!  That helped a lot.

I still question the wisdom of farming out molds with no master back-up at Hasbro HQ, though.

The problem with the funskool line is that there are too many minor variants for any collector to know.  In brief, here the figures released according to the book.

It begs the question, what constitutes an Indian variant? MRF commonly makes toys with whatever plastic and dye is cheaply available at the time. They could shift in the middle of the run to a cheaper dye solution, leaving you with a purple looking figure when it should be blue. The dyes are also really subject to UV, and I've seen a bunch of the figures bleached out in package. Retrofun has a Law in a light brown vest, in package. Is that a variant, a damaged figure or a mistake/production error?

A white snake eyes is clearly a variant. A blue and yellow Bludd is clearly a variant. A slightly different green on a Deep Six? Does that even count?

It counts if there was a production run of them.
