Title: Marvel 3 3/4" figures now at Walmart. Also DC figs.
Post by: canprime on January 03, 2009, 11:13:17 AM
Well I did a little shopping today and found the new Marvel 3 3/4" line of figures today at both Sherway Walmart and Square 1 Walmart.  Square 1 also had the DC figures.

Here is the price:  $7.92 for the DC figures.  $9.92 for the Marvel figures.

DC:  While I am not that impressed by the figures and articulation, they are pretty good overall.  Barely worth the $8 price tag.  Although a great selection of characters.  I only saw Joker, Black Lightning, Spectre, Dr. Fate and Superman.  But on the back I must have missed, Wildcat, Star Sapphire, Question, Scarecrow, Batman, Nightwing, GCPD officer.  So die hard fans will love them, but I probably will only go for the characters I really love.

Marvel:  Ok, $10 is a bit much, but these are some great figures.  Comparing them to the DC figures shows you just how much better they are.  The selection of charcters in wave 1 is a bit puzzling, but at least they didn't go all out in the first wave.  The variants are apparently Stealth Iron Man and Human Torch in FF costume.  This wave has a total of 12!!!! different figures.  Yes a couple of variants, but overall 12 separate figs to get.  This line looks great and I think Hasbro has another hit on their hands, especially one that can easily take over ML.

The DC figures didn't interest me - I will only pick up a few figures from each wave.  As for the Marvel figures, I will grab them all - they have to be better than the ultimate showdown figures, Canada saw only the first 2 waves, and for good reason - they were really crappy!
I am hoping these figures are similar to Joe figures in terms of construction/plastic quality/scale etc.
Hasbro has really dragged on the Marvel Legends 6" line, and the fact the figures went up in price and the sculpt/articulation went down really bothered me.

I picked up 2 from the Marvel stuff and all 5 that I saw from the DC stuff.  Price was the deciding factor.

Articulation of course is far superior with the Marvel line of course.  Some of the characters seem a little scrawny and the Punisher's face scult is awful....but they are changing it next wave.  I anxiously await Bucky Cap.

Green Arrow looks great for the DC line - I think this is the first DC fig that had an accessory.

I'm a huge DC fan. Having said that, the figs kinda suck compared to the Marvel ones. I got Batman and Green Arrow. Had Nightwing been there I would have grabbed him too.
From the Marvel set I got Spiderman and Iron Man. I'm blown away by Iron Man! Great poseability, proportions, shiny paint job. He's the best of the Marvels. I am adding him to my Joe team so Cobra better watch out. Spiderman is okay, I got him because he's Spiderman. His head is a little too small. I wanted Wolverine but for some reason they painted him silver and black. I'll wait till they do "normal" colours.

Did they happen to have Daredevil? He would be the main Marvel character I would look for.

Daredevil is part of the assortment and he does come with red nunchucks.

I passed him up in Guelph Walmart which only got one case of this wave.

I am saving the little shield logos that come in the packaging to replace the Hulkbuster door logos on my Hulkbuster hummer and make it look like the shield vehicle concept pics.

Iron Man is cool.  They painted Wolvie in his X-Force costume.

I have to say, having all but Black Panther & Wolverine, that I really love Silver Surfer the most.  It probably just has to do with his board being such a great accessory, but hey, what can I say?

I think this line will be great for Hasbro.  I am still torn about some of the accessory choices though.  Some are easy, like Silver Surfer or Punisher.  However, Iron Man and Spiderman, while understandable, don't really have accessories that are well executed, in my opinion.

Took a look at Wolvie and Punisher today at Walmart, those were all that were left. At ten bucks a pop, they would have had to have 25th-quality sculpts and they fell a bit short for me. Odd that Hasbro has so many 3 3/4 lines but can't manage to keep quality up across them all. Hell, if the Indy toys were made with Joe parts I think a lot of us would have bought them. And I know it will never happen but if Joe-articulate Star Wars toys ever came out, I may even renounce my self imposed ban on SW action figures. I think the last SW carded figure I bought was Jar Jar v1. lol

Well actually, my girlfriend did while shopping today and she called me at the office.

Can't wait for tonight  :spidey:

Great review - and if I could find these figures at retail I would purchase them.
$10 is a little steep, and when you consider there are 12 of them it gets pricey really quick.

Anyone know how hard the variants or complete sets are to find?

It appears that the cases put out were revision 1 cases.  That means there was no Bullseye or "FLAME ON" Human Torch.  Instead there were doubles of IM, SPIDEY & Wolverine(?).

Technically there are no "VARIANTS" per se.  Each figure is numbered from 1-12 in the first wave.  So while Stealth IM and "FLAME ON" Human Torch are a variation of the other figure, they are numbered separately from that other figure.

Last night I opened my figures and they are great.
Much better than the SHS figures that Toybiz released a few years ago.

Spidey is shorter than Black Panther which is a nice detail.
BP doesn't sport double knee articulations and has a swivel waist instead of a ball jointed torso.
I hink I'll put his head on the black V1 style Snake eyes...

I am gonna save my money for Joes but today I saw what amounts to a major sighting for this line. Wal-mart in east London had nearly the whole line spread over three pegs. That Wal-mart is open 24h. If I was better off I'd have snatched them for Ebay.

Multiples of: Iron Man, Punisher, Wolverine (four or five of Wolvie)

singles of : Torch in blue costume, Daredevil, Black Panther, Spiderman, Silver Surfer

I bought the 9.5cm Iron Man and Spidey yesterday.  I'm really annoyed that the pelvic bar is made of plastic rather than metal like in the Joes. >:(

That being said, the sculpts are great, and the I reallly like the black detailing on Spidey's costume (not a fan of the blue, however) and the metallic paint on Iron Man.  The accessories are understandably lame (why does the web make a massive doughnut behind Spidey's arm??), but the intel dossiers are fun.

I snagged the wolverine.  Was on the fence for a while but caved.  $12bucks after tax is kind of silly for a little figure so I don't think I'll be buying anymore(buyers remorse).  Then again some of the other figs look cool and I broke down for this one. :-

Got Wolverine yesterday.
My very first Wolverine figure ever.

I like it, I like the black and gray suit. Some Joes will get his gear though.

Iron Man is way cooler than Wolverine. I think it may be the best on in the line.

I just bought Silver Surfer and all I can say is this figure looks nicer in the package. He's doesn't stand well as he'll fall off his footpegs on his board in no time.

Wolverine does look nice though. Does anyone know if he stands quite well? I'm willing to give another shot at this line one more time. I won't be completist though since in my opinion some figures don't look that great to me.

Punisher is to me the worst of the lot, with hands as big as his, bad guys outta fear getting spanked by him  !

Wolverine stands fine.  Surfer is a pain to get on his board, but he poses OK on it.  Iron Man is a very nice sculpt.

I think this version of the Punisher is the abscessed tooth version - complete with facial swelling.

I bought some more for customizing projects.

Silver Surfer:
Not crazy about the mould.  The abs are a little TOO ripped, and the head looks... off somehow.  Maybe it's the proportions and/or the face.
The paint is, like Iron Man, really great.  A nice silver that looks shiny, not just flat.  There are some highlights in white, I think.
The board is sculpted in a flat grey, but since the Surfer's ankles aren't ball-jointed, he can't stand on both pegs at the same time.  At least the board is nice and large.

The Punisher:
Mould isn't anything to phone home over.  Waist articulation, but no "ab-crunch" joint.  Hands are really bad, can't hold his weapons.  The head is awful.  The jaw is so huge that it's too big to even make a Bruce Campbell custom out of.
Paint isn't too bad.  The black is broken up by blue highlights, and the white parts have a wash in some areas to bring out detail.
The belt needs to be cut to be removed.  It doesn't have a clip closure like the Joe belts do.
The weapons are nice, except for a) the ridiculous grey launcher thing [WTF is this supposed to be??], b) he can't hold his MP5 properly with both hands, and even with one hand, the stock will be bent out of shape, and c) he pretty much can't use his left hand for holding any of his guns.

Also, at my TRU, the price on the pegs is $10.99 a figure, but they scan at $8.97.  Awesome!

I just wanted to say that you can get Silver Surfer to stand on both pegs at the same time.  He is doing that right now with no problem.  As for his paint app, it kind of comes off as a sort of silver pearl to give him that sheen.

Right now I have all of wave 1, except for Bullseye, and I can honestly say the Silver Surfer is my favourite figure from that wave (Sorry IM & Spidey).  A nice basic figure with good articulation, an accurate likeness and a great accessory!!

Thanks pdaat:

We picked up Spiderman, Ironman, Silver Surfer and DareDevil this weekend and my sons (and Daddy) love them. I think we will have to get the rest. Mom is not pleased.

We had a great battle Saturday night with the superheroes helping the Joes defeat Cobra. The poor Cobras were completely overwhelmed, many of them being crushed by thrown tanks, jeeps and a bridge layer! Storm Shadow had a particularly difficult evening.

Well they have announced the 5 picks from the fan poll that will be made:

Archangel
Winter Soldier
Havok
Mystique
Mary Jane Watson

They have announced they are going to do 7 picks next year.

Overall I am really disappointed.  3 "X" characters, all of whom would most likely have been made anyway.  The Winter Soldier and Mary Jane are both unqiue picks.  I don't think she would have been made anytime soon, if at all, and he is a character that isn't top tier for making a figure (IMO).

I hope they do work in some really out there choices over the next 2 years.

Oh, and there are reports that wave 2 of the comic packs are revealed:

Black Spidey/Magneto
Iron Man/Spiderwoman (black costume)
Hulk/Cyclops

Overall I am disappointed with this wave.  It is great to get Magneto, Spiderwoman & Cyclops, but we already are getting Black Spidey, Classic Iron Man and Hulk so what changes would there be to make them worth buying?

Who is Winter Soldier?

The 2 packs are a cool idea but who they're paired up with is strange. Magneto and Black Spidey? Why not Cyclops and Magneto. Black Spidey and Black Spider Woman?

MJ is a neat pick. She would have been good in 2 pack with Peter Parker or something.

Archangel is one of my favorites. I hope its the silver wings and blue/purple costume from Xfactor.

Winter Soldier is Bucky Barnes.  He was found after allegedly "dying" during WWII and brainwashed by the Russians into an assassin (Winter Soldier).  After the death of Captain America, Bucky/WS became the new Captain America.

I came across most of the Wolverine Origins figures this week.

So far I picked up Deadpool, Gambit, Wolverine (yellow), Wolverine (brown).

It looks like Deadpool, Gambit and Wolverine (brown) are the hardest to find.  Most likely due to the 1 per case ratio.  I did see Maverick and passed, but now I can't find him.

The way Hasbro churns out figures, I wouldn't expect that the Wolverine figures will count as part of the 70.  I can imagine that the likes or Deadpool(sweet figure!) and Gambit could be re-released down the road as part of this series.  Seems like a Hasbro sort of thing to do.

W:O is a different line, released specifically for the movie.

The bonus is that it keeps the MU line free of Wolverine for probably the rest of the year, while still giving us Wolverine in the 3 3/4" line.  Thanks to W:O we now have 3 Wolverine costumes, Deadpool, Gambit, Maverick (who probably wouldn't have been made in the MU line anyway) Sabretooth in a couple costumes and a couple of Logans.

That means more room for secondary characters and Iron Men!!! in the MU line.
