Just saw the trailer on the Maritimes feed of ET--its in the early part of the show--about 5 minutes in, so do not dread having to watch the fluff that they promote in the opener to get to it.

Not gonna spoil it just yet, but folks.............its good.

THanks for the tips guys. Waiting patiently...

ET was painful to sit through....

Anyway, it looks cool. Better than the exo-suit crap first attempt. I just hope they don't kill off characters like Heavy Duty or Breaker. I didn't like when they offed cannon guys in X-Men and I wouldn't like it here.
But anything with Bruce Willis or the Rock is a good time. Snake Eyes and Jinx will be exactly what you'd expect, so it'll be at least worth a Tuesday cheap admission.

Thanks again to all 5 of you for posting the heads-up!

MY..........GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was a thing of beauty!!!!!!!!!!!  Eat your hearts out BayFormers!!!!!

Where to even begin???  CC with a metal faceplate!!!  Red Ninjas!!!!  A freaking ninja battle on a mountain face!!!!  A white viper with SS????  Even the end with Willis' one-liner and Lady Jaye just rolling her eyes, perfect!!!!!!  A machinegun on the motorcycle!!!!  Hell even Jinx looks great.

Man, my hopes are way up, I really hope this isn't a case of all the best parts being in the trailer.

Oh, and were those RATTLERS?????

It looks like most caracters from the first movie will die.  I almost had an heart attack when i saw the trailer.

Only six months to wait  :(

......We will get a lot of great toys next year!

Those jets certainly had the configuration of Rattlers, while not being very "A-10"-like.
There's troopers in Urban Camo, and black assault vests raising the COBRA flag at the White House--likely new figures there. There's the Water Moccassin hovercraft--which looks quite large actually. And there's what appears to be a RAM motorcycle.
Also, the a very fast shot near the 3/4 mark, there's a vehicle going thru an explosion that shows a front grill guard and tires........that looks somewhat like the DreadNoks Thunder Machine--but all that can be seen of it is just those mentioned parts, so it could be ANYTHING.

I'm going to guess right now that these are not all the surprises in store for us.

I paused that spot with the explosion, and it had a very distinct HISS wheel track, and looked very much like a HISS Scout with some extra bits on top.

Im very excited, looks like they really tried to update GI Joe rather than remake it, at least design wise.

I'm digging it.  Because it's about American football, I doubt many of you guys watched Adrianne Palicki in Friday Night Lights but she's very good.  Oh yeah, FNL is worth watching even if you don't give a crap about football, and not just 'cause the next Lady Jaye is in it, either.

that looks AWESOME.

and Lady Jaye kicks ass and looks good. i'm sold.

see why they put Renegades on hold though.

It looks like they wipe out the G.I. Joe team so that they can re-launch the series. Good idea. I'd rather an almost clean wipe of the team and minimal reference to the first movie. Sure, Duke, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Zartan are still in play and it builds off Zartan is the president, but most of the original cast is gone.

G.I.Joe has enough characters that they can afford to wipe out a bunch of guys and give us a clean new team with a few core elements from the first movie in place.

What I was surprised to see was The Rock's tattoo on his left arm  peck were not covered with makeup. It will be interesting to see if his action figure includes the tattoos and what sort of detail they will have.

I hope that Hawk and the rest of the Alphas aren't killed (the exception being Ripcord).  Maybe they've gone into hiding, and can return for G.I. Joe 3.

Fantastic!
Watched it twice this morning and I'm very excited.
This looks like the movie Joe-fans have been asking for.

I can't wait for the toys. So much cool stuff.

This time last GI Joe movie, I was hearing whispers of a Duke and Baroness relationship, and there was all this fear of Wayans as Ripcord and that there was no real buzz from the studio except the director talking like he wanted to do a James Bond movie and settled for GI Joe. The best we could do was hope for the best.

This time, there is no fear. John Chu bleeds enthusiasm for GI Joe, all those weird teeny-bopper castings seem like they are just to pad the first fifteen minutes, and The Rock has been acting like this is his favourite role ever. Now with the trailer out, I can't set my expectations any lower than YES!!!

yeah, funny that the guy who did 'Step Up 2' and everyone was peeing the pants over is apparently directing the best thing to happen to GI Joe since 1982!

I was thinking the exact same thing. Sometimes you have to take the jobs you don't want so that you can get the ones you want. I suspect that might be the case here.

You can tell by the trailer that John Chu was a G.I. Joe fan.  Even with being 2 minutes long, there are lots of iconic G.I. Joe moments here.  I got chills when I saw the Cobra flags unveiled at the White House.

I am one of the few people who will publically admit that I love Rise of Cobra, but this one just blows that one out of the water.

Retaliation is like crack.... I just need more footage!!!!  Awesome.

I'm glad to see that the crew was able to be fiscally responsible as well.

I mean, your decide you want to do wire work for the ninja fight and obviously they got together and said, "how can we make it cool, while watching the budget?"

"Easy, let's do a wire fight on a mountain and we won't have to digitally remove the wires, thousands saved!!"

"Yay. Yeah.  Yo JOE!!"

Ok, I have too much time.

They could have kept Duke and Scarlett.  Like it or not, they are major characters in the Joe world.

After re-watching the trailer, Duke was killed off.

I think Duke was the only reappearing cast member (no Ripcord, Scarlett, Breaker or Heavy Duty?) so hopefully no one else got killed off.
Wasn't Tunnel Rat or Grunt supposed to be in this? Don't see them anywhere... An early exit perhaps?

And no one has mentioned lack of Snake Eyes lips....old news?  People hated that in movie one.

Funny how you left out Breaker from your list of returning characters. The more I watch Rise of Cobra, the more I realize Saïd Taghmaoui put in that movies funniest, most nuanced performance.

Snake's mask is now a slick from fitting helmet and it looks awesome.
People screamed so much about his rubber mouth in the first one that they simply removed them and now people are happy.

that annoyed me, because the V2 figure has lips on the mask. don't these people pay attention?

I think Duke will still be around.  Too common a story thread.  Most of the older Joe deaths (if any) will be off screen.
Title: Re: Retaliation Trailer Preview
Post by: SnowHawk on December 14, 2011, 02:30:26 PM
I hate to say it, but I think Duke is dead.  I've rewatched the trailer many more times and after everyone is killed, it's not Duke walking out of the desert with Roadblock.  In the ending when Roadblock says he knows someone they can call, it's not Duke with him there either.

It makes sense that Duke is killed in the movie.  The Rock is doing most of the promotion for the movie.  There is only the two scenes with Duke in the trailer.  If Channing Tatum was a bigger star in the movie, he would grab more screen time.

Channing Tatum wouldn't have been my first choice for Duke (especially when Sam Worthington was in talks for the role in ROC).  Duke is important to the G.I. Joe franchise, but in the 80's he disappeared a bit and other Joes like Leatherneck, Wetsuit, Lifeline, Dialtone and Mainframe became the stars of the cartoon and comic books.

Keep in mind that context and juxtaposition of shots in a trailer can be VERY misleading.  For example: the shots of the "Rattler" jets, and then a shot of the Joes in the interior of some kind of vehicle can convey that the Joes are using Rattlers ( scaled up for transports) instead of them being COBRA craft.
Alos, a shot like the COBRA flags and banners unfurling at the White House in the middle of the trailer can imply that such a shot is in the body of the film, where it MIGHT well be placed as the very end shot--the close of the story, leading to a third. The shot is a classic truck-out to a wider shot reveal, which is often used to close out a story, especially one where a reveal is used to set up a cliffhanger/ to-be-continued type of ending.
So, as for Duke.........they could very well kill off the character ( and others) but they may also have an ace-in-the-hole kind of out for him to come back later on.
If anything, this is part of the psychology of a trailer at work here, especially a sequel movie trailer. We are already familliar enough with the characters to have a connection to them, so they can start pulling the strings on those characters to entice us.
They want us all to question things we see in the trailer, because those questions become hooks to get the audience to commit to seeing the film, and frankly I think they succeeded in that with this trailer alone. They may be setting things up as we assume, or they may have something very different planned, and there are things UNSEEN as yet, too. Have they shown us the big climatic set-piece yet? Why are the ninjas fighting on a cliff side......what's at the top of the cliff? Its a spectacular set-piece, but what's the context and place in the story? At this point, its very hard to say.

To add additional perspective: I DO suspect that the final battle is going to be in the New Orleans locale. I say that for two reasons: one from the trailer and one from the ET coverage a few weeks back. Both involved Roadblock fighting Firefly. In the trailer example, he's fighting him in civvie guise, at night in a seedy looking warehouse type setting......and likely not doing to well. In the ET coverage, there's a shot of Roadblock putting some kind of grappling hold on Firefly, while both are in the dirt near the shoreline, during the sunset. Very different locales, different situations, but one fight likely leads the other. Roadblock also has his "glory moment" with the Ma Deuce also in what appears to be the New Orleans location.
So.....take all that what you will, but do keep in mind that the trailer could well be "misleading" us to make connections where connections may not be valid. Conjecture with caution.  ;)

I think Duke was captured and needs to be rescued or in a comma or something other then dead. I just don't see Hasbro killing off their poster boy for G.I. Joe.

I like that idea that Duke is captured.  Never thought of that possibility.  It makes sense that Cobra would grab him, since the Joes have had Commander, Desto and Baroness for a couple of years  ;)
