Yearly CanJoeCon Discussion / Re: Friday night before the con
« on: August 05, 2012, 06:49:00 PM »
I was wondering the same thing (for Saturday night "post-con" as well). Last year, a number of us got together at Jack Astor's for dinner/drinks after the dealer room closed on Friday night. From the 2011 video recently posted, it looks like a number of folks got together at Montana Cookhouse as well (couldn't tell if that was on Friday night or Saturday night). It would be cool to choose a place/restaurant for veteran and new JoeCanuck members to chill out together after the convention activities.

... Between getting THE Mike's name wrong, constantly referring to the "non-applicable" era of G.I. Joe, ..."
What exactly is the "non applicable era of GI Joe"?  The Can Joe Con celebrates all eras of GI Joe.  Humble and Fred releate to what they grew up with.  MY GI Joe was in the 80's.  My son plays with the newer stuff, which I don't collect.  If you've ever attended The Can Joe Con, you would know that there are many dealers and attendees who sell and collect 12 inch Joes from the 60's, 70's and today.  Just because you don't, it does not make them any less important or "applicable".
I could clearly turn this into an argument, but I am going to try and answer this respectfully.

When I wrote "non applicable", I placed it in quotes because I didn't mean it literally. What I meant is that although the CJC represents and welcomes all eras of G.I. Joe, and we want the largest (most diverse) crowd attending in support of our hobby, in my opinion and based on my observations from my attendance of the last two CJCs, the 12" era of Joe is not the focus of the convention (i.e., not the prime target audience). Case in point: the exclusives are 3.75" scale, most of the door prizes are geared towards 3.75" collectors, the panel discussions are geared towards the 3.75" crowd, etc. If THE Mike hadn't corrected/clarified what The Humble and Fred were discussing about G.I. Joe or the convention, if I were a 3.75" collector listening to the podcast who wasn't previously aware of the CJC's existence, I would assume (before performing the due diligence of checking the website) that the focus of the show would be 12" Joes and I would be less likely to attend (i.e., I felt that The Humble and Fred were misleading their audience). Just as you had mentioned that you don't collect the newer stuff, I don't collect the 12" inch stuff, nor should anyone be expected to collect anything that doesn't resonate with them.

As I mentioned in my thread of the Introductions forum, one of the main reasons that I enjoy the CJC is the openness of everyone to new attendees (such as myself in 2010) and the absence of cliques (and in-fighting).

Ah Blitz, Blitz, Blitz.

If they wanted me to come on the show and mock G.I. Joe for 10 minutes, I'd happily let them - why? It's 10 minutes of conversation about G.I. Joe - good or bad, and the end result is a plug on their show, their blog, facebook, twitter, and website.

So yeah, they went off topic - but they had fun, and they left me promote the con in a different way.

Case in point - I was contacted by 9 old customers and 1 old friend today as a result of this podcast - ALL Of them had no clue about the con, and 4 of them are coming.

Either way, I'm happy with a podcast giving me 10 minutes of their time to promote G.I. Joe regardless how they are, and I'd do it again if they asked me back.

Also, worth mentioning, the best CJC radio or podcast spot that has been done (and it didn't even include me) is here: http://www.joecanuck.com/2010/ads/joe3.mp3

Guaranteed to cheer you up!

THE Mike,

Thanks for providing some background information on those podcasters. And if you're okay with how you were treated and it benefits the show, then I can lower my inner body temperature from boiling to simmering.

And thanks for providing the clip above. For me, that was a good example of how to balance serious promotion/coverage with good-natured ribbing of the hobby (e.g., doll vs. action figure).

It started today with an appearance on The Humble and Fred podcast.  Check it out at www.humbleandfredradio.com . It can also be accessed across Canada on the Rogers Radio Network.

I just listened to the interview portion of the podcast, and THE Mike should win the award for Most Patient Guest. The Humble and Fred are the two biggest no-talent hacks I have ever heard. In the age of the Intertubes, all it would have taken is 10 minutes of Google searching to at least give the illusion that they somewhat knew what they were talking about. Between getting THE Mike's name wrong, constantly referring to the "non-applicable" era of G.I. Joe, trying to get him to sing the (wrong) theme song, interrupting him with the 60's 12" G.I. Joe theme song, barely plugging the event, I don't know how he didn't completely lose it. I would have just laid into them and hung up. "The most downloaded podcast in Etobicoke..." - I am assuming this is only because there are no other podcasts to download from that town. I am not going to even mention what those two losers said after THE Mike hung up.

I really hope that THE Mike's upcoming radio promotions are more pleasant experiences than that podcast nightmare.

That cover is a thing of beauty! I cannot stop staring at it. I am glad that I ordered several copies of the comic.

Any chance that the cover could be turned into a poster?

I believe that morgardee summarized the evolution of the Canadian con set very well.

Thanks for the heads up on the 2012 schedule!

Does the finalization of the schedule imply that the guest list is finalized as well?

Yearly CanJoeCon Discussion / Re: Second CanJoeCon Vehicle
« on: July 31, 2012, 10:33:59 AM »
I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't disappointed that we won't be receiving a second vehicle for the 2012 set, but if my hunch in the comic preview thread is correct (and based on the initial estimated cost to produce the mystery vehicle, I believe it is), it's the part of the convention set that I'd sacrifice to ensure that we get the awesome other vehicle and stellar figures.

Sorry to hear that it didn't work out. I don't even want to imagine the level of frustration you're feeling from it. I'm still looking forward to picking up my con set.

Off Topic / Questions for Toronto Subway (TTC) Riders
« on: July 29, 2012, 09:52:45 PM »
Hi All,

For the first time, I'll be flying in one day before the convention so that I can visit downtown Toronto. I'd like to avoid driving into the city, so I was thinking of taking the subway in. Based on my assessment, it looks like Kipling is the closest station to the convention hotel.

Regarding Kipling station...

I can see that there is parking available at the station (I am renting a car), but is parking a problem after a certain hour (i.e., lack of spaces)? Or is it only available for regular commuters?

Is there an issue with car break-ins at train stations (or this one in particular)?

I don't have a debit card or a chip card, so will I have a problem paying for parking or my ticket?

Do you just buy your ticket at a vending machine and get on board? Does someone check tickets or is there a turnstyle to go through?

Can you buy a day pass (multiple trips on the same ticket)?

Is the GO Transit system somehow different from the regular TTC system?

Downtown Toronto Questions:

I would like to go to the area around the Eaton Town Centre, so am I correct that it is Queen station where I should get out?

How easy is it to transfer between the green line and the yellow line?

Is Union Station the closest station to the CN Tower? If so, can I walk to it from there?

Only because of the Colorado movie theater shooting did I hear about a shooting in the Toronto Eaton Town Centre food court. Is crime an issue in downtown Toronto, or is violent crime like that an isolated incident?

Speaking of crime, how prevalent are non-violent crimes like pickpocketing in downtown and/or on the subway?

Whichever questions you can answer above for this newbie traveler, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Yearly CanJoeCon Discussion / Re: 2012 Canadian GIJoe comic preview
« on: July 29, 2012, 09:28:12 PM »
The last preview page I'll post of the comic. It's the first page.
https://twitter.com/Rebel_Loo/status/229053888551075840/photo/1/large

The excellent artwork continues!  8)

Without any dialogue, I feel like I'm watching an episode of "Lost", where the more information that I'm given, the more questions I have.  ???

I am sure that the dialogue will clarify alot of that, because if this is the first page, it seems like some of the panels/events are out of order. Perhaps the middle row is a bunch of flashbacks.

I'm glad to see that the 2011 Canuckleheads will be somehow involved in the storyline as well. I am still trying to figure out who the reddish/orange bearded skiier is, cuz I doubt it's Snow Job... maybe the Canuckleheads' drill instructor?

I am also trying to figure out who the military officer is with Joe Canuck. Between this page and the previous one shown, I am starting to wonder whether there's a traitor/betrayal storyline involved. Since this first page looks like the officer is helping to provide the Canuckleheads with supplies, but in the previous page shown, the last row of panels is split between the officer, HAGAR, and Retrofit. Although the officer is using the same type of communicator that Joe Canuck has on his jacket, I can't tell if he is talking to Joe Canuck or HAGAR/Retrofit. Perhaps HAGAR and Retrofit are eavesdropping on the conversation between the officer and Joe Canuck. Another possibility may be if the CJC team are doing a traitor storyline like in the 2010 comic, it might be a revenge betrayal where one of the good guys (i.e., the officer) is actually an undercover Cobra North agent, or even the mysterious 2nd in command of Cobra North mentioned in the file cards for whom HAGAR is his avatar.

So many questions, and I still need to wait almost two weeks for the answers.

Counting down the days...
