Off Topic / Re: Some stuff I've been working on....
« on: November 10, 2014, 03:10:43 PM »
I'm still drawing...
These are all items for PUNCH, and the Amazing Stories comic shop

The first bunch are self-caricatures meant to accompany an article, actually a series of articles, on toy collecting. The mascot is a character based on myself called "Toy King":

And here is the Toy King himself.

This here is a pin-up for the lastest issue of PUNCH ( #4) due out this Weds. It's a Christmas themed image, for the combo Halloween/Christmas issue.
It is Toy King ( again) versus his perennial nemesis, in a battle for the most toys....

This image is a illustration done on one of those blank cover variant comics that comic stores get. The idea ( I guess) is to have someone draw or doodle on them and they get sold or auctioned off. This one is for a silent charity auction for a local food bank.
If you are local to Saskatoon, please feel free to come in to Amazing Stories and bid on the entries in the Silent Auction ( starting on Weds Nov 12th 2014)--there's a lot of great covers done, and the proceeds all go to a good cause.

Didn't those things have a switchbox/adapter to set to either the game or the TV?? Maybe you have to set the TV to an auxiliary mode or something?

I had many opportunities to buy the Ashiko figure and bike, but I held off.  I kept reading reviews that said that the figure was a frustrating mess of parts that kept falling off at the slightest movement.
Frankly, that's all I need to read to keep me from buying something I know I'd regret.

And it looks like I'm not alone.

General Joe Talk / Re: Hasbro drops Gi Joe? ???

I've read also that the 3rd ( and 4th) movies are also in the works still, and that Hasbro IS working on GIJOE products for them.  There's still persistent rumours of a 6" "Black Series" GIJOE line as well, that would very likely be related to the movie.

So as disappointing as this current situation is. it's just a lull.........not a "deth of teh line".

Great transaction with Zenith27--helped me restore my Triple-T to complete condition.
Many thanks!

All Across Canada / Re: Don't forget about Amazon.com

So basically it is a good deal if you can get something fairly cheap to offset the high shipping cost.

Sorry, but with the current status of the GI Joe brand, and aftermarket, it is better to wait than over pay anymore.  Especially on anything Retaliation related.

Yes.  And I agree with the sentiment about waiting.  I've wanted the Night-Viper but been unable to find it anywhere else for a reasonable price, so this was my opportunity.  It also closes my Joe collecting for now because there's nothing else out there that I really want ( Marauder Task Force being the non-Joe exception).

Shipping is now a major cost-concern for me ( and many others), but I do have ways to mitigate that.

All Across Canada / Don't forget about Amazon.com
« on: August 20, 2014, 05:49:15 PM »
Just yesterday, I placed an order for a Retaliation Night-Viper from Amazon.com--the US-version of the on-line store.
Now, for quite a while Amazon.com was notorious for offering some cool toys and such, but wouldn't ship to Canada.

Well, that has changed...........mostly.

Amazon itself appears to ship north, but some vendors that offer through Amazon do or don't, depending on their own shipping policies.
The upside is that it's made some items, like the above mentioned Night-Viper easier to find/score.
The downside is price/shipping costs.
The NV was $20, with about $10 shipping--but if you order two, the shipping drops to about $7. if you are okay with that, then it opens up options for finding things.
Bear in mind that Amazon.com offers "free shipping" on orders over $35 USD...........BUT, be forewarned that it's not really "free", because on the check-out tally there's a shipping and handling fee that seems to ring up at $10 or more. There also appears to be reduced shipping options as well, so keep that in mind.

I'm tired of reading about people whining about it.
I'm not whining about it, at least I'm certainly not intending too. I was being matter-of-fact.

If I have a complaint, it's that nothing has been done to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the brand, a milestone that other toy lines cannot often say.
Oh, yeah.....there's some piddling 4" scale offerings coming out........from a part of the brand that ISN'T 50 years old.
Instead, Hasbro wants us to celebrate the trademark of the brand.....
Wow.

Even Kirk Bozigian saw the irony in that....

For the rest of it........I'm really indifferent to it now.  I'm beyond complaining about what Hasbro does. They don't care, so why should I care......I mean, where's the INCENTIVE??
I'm more excited about what Marauder Gun-Runners is doing on their own than anything Hasbro is doing for GIJOE.  The movies are meh, the comics are awful, and the brand........well, it is tired.

That's okay too.
Because I also still like what I have, there's still fun things to look forward to outside of what the brand is....there's still years of stuff ahead. I've been collecting Joes, as an adult, since 1985. I had the originals when I was a kid in the 60's and 70's. I'm still involved in it in some way, as a collector and I will be for a long time yet.

I agree that I think this line is done.  I think expecting a return after a hiatus is expecting more support than is really there.  I think any GIJOE product from now on will be tepid and half-assed. It's no longer a perennial brand at Hasbro, the design team has ( apparently) been disbanded, and there's no push to get a third movie made. There's more urgency to get something like Jem and the Holograms done first instead.

Yeah, Hasbro is REALLY standing behind GIJOE now ( dripping sarcasm).......so far behind that they've dropped down over the horizon, out of sight.

I have 6 of the sideshow figures, 4 COBRAs, 2 Joes........working on trying to get a v1 Snake-Eyes.
I like all of them.  I have Firefly too, and honestly, he is one of my favs.  I built my COBRA Viper from loose parts, from various retailers........he's not 100% complete, but he's "Viper" enough for me.  The thing I dig about these figures is that they are NOT 100% takes on the original looks. I like the derivations, the changes made, the "upgrades", if you will.
I was lucky in acquiring mine.....I only paid full-price for one of them, the rest were less-than-retail for various reasons. They ARE expensive, and at least 25%+ over-priced--certainly for the early figures. The most recent ones are criminally over-priced.

But they are nice items.  For a few bucks more searching the after-market, it's easy enough to sweeten them up with other gear--grenades, more ammo mags, other bits of kit. Sideshow did a good enough job with the outfits and gear that you cab leave the figures as is, or go all out.
The sad thing is that trying to fill holes in a collection, or to jump on board this line right now will be a serious heart-attack to the wallet.  Unless someone is seriously Johnny-on-the-spot in finding any of these figures for good discounts, well.........you'll pay too much.
Just this afternoon, I saw the most recent Stormshadow figure ( V2) for $216, at a local store.
Ouch.
That's about $100 too much for me. I was into this hobby well before figures as kitted out as these sold for $50-$60, some 20 years ago.
Anything over $100-ish gives me a big pause, and by the sounds of it, does the same for a lot of others.

But I think this line is done.

General Joe Talk / Re: New sets for the 50th anniversary!
« on: June 13, 2014, 05:40:35 PM »
Exclusive doesn't mean "one". It means "restricted to a person or group" TRU and BBTS are that group. :)

So we might see this set at TRU... I mean Canadian TRU?

Really hard to say, and I'd say more than likely "no".
Retaliation 3.5 & 4 wasn't carried by Canadian TRUs because TRU felt burned by Retaliation product (meaning also GIJOE product in general) after wave 2.
From what my source at TRU has told me, there's no sign of ANY GIJOE product in the computer listings there, but that was a couple of months ago.
He usually gives me a heads up on stuff like Joes coming in.

The thing is that the CDN TRU ordering system isn't set in stone, and stuff that isn't "intended" to come to Canada sometimes does, and stuff that is supposed to be in North American TRUs sometimes is either just in the US OR the Canadian ones, and not both.

In other words, the 50th anniversary stuff is a crap-shoot here.
