General Joe Talk / Re: GIJOE Movie Reviews are pouring in...
« on: August 08, 2009, 09:16:00 AM »
Guys (and girls), I am glad that most of us like the movie...we really can't get too snooty about a film that represents a children's toy concept that we as grown adults collect.

When I got into collecting in 1996, I never, EVER would have thought I'd see a big budget live-action G.I. Joe film

I thought the film was extremely fun and I was actually on the edge of my seat for a lot of it. I am a HUGE "Real American Hero" fan; watched the entire run of the Sunbow cartoon (even a fair amount of DIC episodes), read all 155 issues of the Marvel run several times and despite knowing how the story "should" go, I have no problems with the changes in Rise of Cobra. Every iteration of G.I. Joe is different to varying degrees. Even Sunbow and Marvel contradicted each other within the same toyline.

Rise of Cobra is a blast, plain and simple - it's gonna be a long 2 years waiting for the next installment!

PS I just got the Assault/Defense of Cobra Island boxsets and they are really awesome!

For Sale or Trade / 2009 Canadian JoeCon set
« on: June 18, 2009, 09:34:44 AM »
I've been considering selling my #75 lately. The set is really well done and I like it; however, looking at my upcoming college tuition bill recently makes me think that perhaps selling the set might be a good idea. I've applied the stickers so I don't expect full eBay value but the rarity still makes it worth something to me. I'm thinking $400 with some loose 25th and vintage figures included to soften the blow. If you live in the Niagara-to-GTA region I might be able to drop it off. PM me if interested.

For anyone that has a floppy Frostback, tighten the screws and he should stand up on his own.

Thanks for the tip, but it didn't work with mine. The hip joints and torso joint refuse to tighten up...but, it's OK as he'll be driving most of the time anyway.

I really enjoyed putting the Canadian stickers on. I haven't done that since 1985 - really brought back some nostalgia.

I like HISS tanks and have several - a silver one is a great addition.

I'm also very impressed that the con set design team was able to take what are probably the most common 25th/ME toys in Canada and make them the rarest, all with a believable story and good packaging.

Chacal Noir is an excellent figure and I like the Dead Eye much more than the Armadillo (the Canadian stickers and extra cannons push the Dead Eye over the top).

The only things I'm concerned about with the set are:

- how durable it is - most con toys seem pretty fragile due to their limited runs and "for collectors only" status. The JoeCon set is more durable than I expected but I still wonder how long it will last from me occasionally moving it around, posing the figures...playing with them  ;D How long do chrome finishes last? That kind of thing.

- my Frostback Trooper is super-floppy. Not a huge deal as he'll be driving the HATE most of the time but a bit more joint tightness would be nice. I'm no customizer but I imagine the figures needed to be disassembled and re-glued/screwed for the black dye to reach everywhere.

My reasons then are nostalgia and just enjoying the concept. I suppose I've ruined the financial aspect by stickering everything and psoing the figures  ;D

I've never bought a convention exclusive EVER but I picked this one up because it seemed really well done. I wasn't let down - great job by everyone involved.

This year's convention was really well done. Everyone involved should be happy with their effort and achievement. The only improvement suggestions I can offer are:

- A better PA system with more announcements. Work it out around the TV journalists ;)

- More signage. A huge banner for specialty areas (i.e. free table, customs table etc.) Yes, most people will eventually find everything from walking around; however, excessive signage adds to the excitement and bombastic-ness of a toy convention IMO. Actually, banners for everything would be great - it would really add to the visuals if vendors could bring signs for their tables as well. I believe a convention, especially a toy convention, needs way more visual overload than common sense would normally allow :)

- the aforementioned idea of a section with constantly-running Joe episodes. A larger multi-media component in general would be cool - how about an NES running the two 8-bit Joe games? Or a JAMMA cabinet running the Joe arcade game?

- A specific area for photo ops with the cosplayers. The costumes I saw were amazing and yes, there were many photos taken of them. It would be even cooler if there was a large Joe logo standee where the cosplayers and fans could stand and pose for photos - less background clutter (simple is better, as my college photojournalism instructor constantly says ;)

- A specific area for the kids (the real ones, not the kids at heart ;). Could probably be combined near the free table (for playtime-fodder) and the NES setup. I'm sure there were kids at the free table already but I'm thinking something a little more for them, like putting a playmat down for them and some kind of barrier so they can play on the ground and people don't trip over them. Maybe a variety of scrap items for playing...I used to make bases out of cardboard tubes and boxes, sheets and foil etc. - that kind of thing.

Are you talking about Star Cases? Try www.wholesalecases.com

I'm in need of about 10 myself.

Cool, thanks. I assume it's the original Star Case that works best for carded Joes?

Anyone want to split an order? I think I need around 60.

Like the ones 25th Doc came with. Anyone know where to get these? They don't have to be Hasbro brand.
