I'm definately coming - leaving Friday 13th at 0710, and arriving at Lester B Pearson at 1740.
Leaving on the 20th of April, so anybody got some suggestions of stuff to do in the 'hood for the rest of the week?
-
I split this from the other Joe Meet thread.
I think you'll get more replies for 'other' things to do around Southern Ontario in it's own thread!
Let me see what I can dig up for suggestions. - anyone else want to offer some for the time being?
Mike

Are you the same Moto-Viper on joecustoms from Sydney, Australia? Man, that is a long haul.
You have to check out Toronto. Tons to do there. Anything in mind besides the obvious CN Tower tour. Even the Blue Jays are in town from April 9 to 19.
-
Wowzers! Coming from down under!
Yes, you should definitely check out the CN Tower and watch a Jays game. If you are coming with your significant other then you might want to check out Mirvish Production of We Will Rock You, take a walk along Harbourfront and hopefully see a live jazz band, and dine at the 360 restaurant on top of the CN Tower. If your want to party in the Toronto night life, Dance Cave, Mod Club, Phoenix are decent for rock/garage/indie venues, otherwise any club on Richmond plays Top 40.
Check out Kensington Market for an eclectic selection of food, clothes, and anything cool and trendy.
Royal Ontario Museum, Ontario Science Center, and maybe even the Art Gallery of Ontario are also worthy places of viewing.
Oh, and when you're down around the CN Tower/Rogers Center area, check out the Steam Whistle Brewery and get a tour of the place while drinking free samples.
You'll also need to stop by the Silver Snail comic shop on Queen St W.

You know what's strange.
I've NEVER been to the CN Tower. Not once in my life.
How messed is that.
-
It's pricy, but you can't beat the view Mike. The elevator is expensive, but it's cheap if you're willing to use the stairs... ;-)
You'll also have to hit the Falls and take a few pictures. No sense coming all the way around the world without seeing the thing. It takes about 40 minutes to do the whole town, including the Marvel museum. Never been to the latter, but I hear that it's the best geek trip this side of the wrestling restaurant.

Geez, even I've been up there, and I suffer from a highly traumatic fear of heights.

Marvel Museum, you say?
-
It's not a museum.
The Marvel Place is a 'game place' with items to buy, a couple of kiddie rides, and some 'museum type' things.
But it's hella cool - and free for the most part.
Something cool about seeing Thors hammer 2 feet away from you.
And the life-size Spidey.... and all the villians hanging from teh ceiling...... yeah. It's cool.

There is a fairly good chance that my band will be playing in Hamilton on the night of the 14th (around 10pm after the meet)... I'm sure we could get a bunch of you guys guestlisted if you wanted to come out. We'd be playing with some very loud rock bands tho.
I'll keep you guys informed.
-
How loud, Jon? And any of them worth seeing? I'd love to see you live, but not if it's a five minute set surrounded by crap.
-
Very loud. I happen to like the other bands, but they are loud and listening to them requires earplugs.
I can't post any specific information until the show is confirmed though.
-
Ah, thank you all for your suggestions - I'll definately be going to the falls, and probably taking the stairs at the tower. Plenty of food for thought thankyou.
-
and probably taking the stairs at the tower.
HA! thats funny! You ever watch Canadian Bacon? I bet you don't!
-
Jon, I'm coming up with a couple other geeks for the meet. I want to see your band play, I'm nuts about loud rockin' music (gotta talk to the other guys). What time does the band go on that night?
-

I was kidding actually about actually doing that. It takes about 4 hours to do for a healthy male (which I am not) and is the cardio equivilent of half a marathon. I'm not sure you can actually do it outside of fund rasing events and evacualtions.
-
-
I run long distance (half marathon  ), took the stairs up the eiffel tower, osaka tower, sydney tower, the two towers at Bolonga and all sorts of other places - so I actualy seek out these places when I go on trips to climb up. But if its not generally open... well then that sucks.

Loud as the Illuminati? DFA1979 (RIP)?

Oh, I didn't realize you were insane. ;-)
I'll look into seeing if you can get into the stairs on a regular day.

You hadn't realised yet?

Yes.
I will post links as soon as the show is confirmed. We're still working out details.
If the show is a go, expect my band to hit the stage around 10-11pm.

On climbing the CN tower.
Bad news: You can only climb it as part of an event.
Good news: there is an event in April - the WWF is running a fund raising event. You'd even get a WWF shirt that says "I climbed the CN tower."
Bad news: the proposed date for the event is April 28th. A little too late for Moto. :-(
But you can still take the elevator up to the 360 restaurant and see the view.
-
-
Man, off by days. What if he pretends to be training for the WWE event?
-
Not WWE. WWF. ;D
-
Yeah... those Panda Peopla... The Wildlife Wrestling Foundation. ;-)
-
Going off topic here, I remember years ago back in high school I has totally failing my world geography test and the one question was "What is the WWF?". Sure, I knew that one but what the hell, I figure if I'm going down, I might as well go down big. I answered World Wrestling Federation. Got no marks for that one. Mind you the best answer on the test was "Quebec wants a ________ ________ clause". My answer was "Quebec wants a French Sanata Clause".
Man I wish I could have watched Mr.Taylor grade that paper.
-
I once answered 'I don't know' several times on a maths test - didn't work even though it was true :(
Thanks for the info anyway Raps, guess I'll have to go the normal way.
-
Yeah... those Panda Peopla... The Wildlife Wrestling Foundation. ;-)
Funny, just yesterday I was thinking of how the World Wrestling Federation made snippy comments about how no one mistook what they did for what the World Wildlife Foundation did and that it was bogus they had to change their name.
-
Yeah... those Panda Peopla... The Wildlife Wrestling Foundation. ;-)

Very loud. I happen to like the other bands, but they are loud and listening to them requires earplugs.
All those years of hitting the clubs must have caused some ear damage to me. Anything that requires ear plugs for music, I am not game any more.

Dude, just wear the earplugs.
Anyways, this show is off. Working on something else, but it probably won't be on the 14th.

hey for anyone interested in things to do in the area, i just found out there's a comic show going on that same weekend in Toronto (I always go to these and look for Gi Joes, sometimes i get lucky). I'll be going the friday after work, so I'll post here if there are any good toys (and if anyone wants me to just keep an eye open for something, just let me know)
Here's some info:

ok i went to the convention. of course there's TONNES of comics, and one guy selling Gi Joes. He has a vamp, a thundermachine and a joe small green plane (the name excapes me).
he had a tonne of loose figures selling for $5-10 each (a few straight arm scarlets, a stalker....bunch of ok stuff) as well as some of those crappy non balljointed leg 2packs in box for $5 each (he had destro/grunt, wetsuit & cobra moray, heavy duty & cobra CLAW) I picked up a the wetsuit/moray & a few heavy duty/claw ones for the Claw soldiers and for my god son (who thanks to me has a huge gi joe collection) but if anyone needs these for some bizzaro collection, let me know as i am not attached to them, and will part with them for trade or whatever.
I did pick up some GREAT cobra soldiers though, all for $5 each (all complete with assessories)
Scoop
Python Patrol cobra officer
rock python (to complete my set of 3)
Heat Viper (ya they suck, but i am going to customize a bunch to be black, then they'll look cool)
Wild Weasle (version 1)
Sea Slug pilot
Ice Viper (complete)
laser Viper
Breaker (straight arm, complete)
I probably bought more then i normally would have but i am so excited for tomorrow.
I also stopped in 3rd Quadrant (a comic store by city tv, downtown toronto) and they have the most gi joe stuff then i have seen there (which isn't a tonne, but i'll mention what i saw). He's not super cheap but I'd say he's fair for a guy that's trying to run a business. If anyone wants i'll describe what was there but i don't remember all the names of the items.
