Hi all,
For a long time I've been happy to display Joes at my home but because this will no longer be possible (until we get a big enough house that is), I am now storing them all away.
I had them individually bagged for a while now and they're all in a big rubber bin. I'd say 85-90% of my figures are complete, the rest are missing a few accessories or in some cases their filecard.
I used to have the filecards stored in a small index box. I just had the idea of pulling each figure out and pairing it with its filecard before putting them back in the box.
My idea is I'd want to catalog every single item I own as well as quantities and complete/incomplete status.
I ask for advice on storing Joes away, expecially to those that had to deal with the same situation. I know that maintaining an excel list is probably a good idea if one has multiples of one figure. If you have other good ideas such as ways of coupling filecards with the figures, and protecting both at the same time, do let me know I'm opened to suggestions.
Thanks for reading!

Be careful about putting Joes in a bag with their filecard. That could lead to the filecards getting scratched or dug up by the figure. That's happened to me before. >:(
-
Like he said ^^ I'm not sure it is a good idea to put the filecard into the same bag of the fig. Your previous system (index box) looks like a better long term solution.
As for storing them away... I can rent you a part of my basement...

I guess "Good business is where you find it" :)
As for your comments about not inserting the filecard and the figure in the same bag, thanks guys. I also had that same bad feeling about it so after bagging about a good 50 of them (that took 2 hours at least), I stopped, took a distance, asked myself what I was doing and decided to start this thread.
But I'm now back at the beginning of my problems, and I'd like the guys who have dealt with the same situation to give me their feedback, that could help.
Snakes, Martin, If you'd dealt before with the same situation, your further imput's always welcome.
EDIT: Per instance, how did you deal with it on your side in the end, that's my real question?
-
I haven't done any kind of serious storing, so I can't really help you, but I'm thinking of going to "figure in bag with his gear" route. I've read that some bags might lead to discolouration over time, but I don't know if that's true or not. Might have something to do with the acidity, like how comic and card bags/sheets say they're "acid-free." I'm really not sure. Sorry, man. :-[
-
Here's my situation: I have roughly over 600 loose figures (I know I had about a little over 600 back in 2004). And about 300 filecards. I don't consider a figure to be complete if it doesn't have a filecard, as long as it has all accessories.
If I put the figures in bags, I was thinking maybe like Martin said to keep the filecards in an index box or folder. And create and excel file put all the figure names by year in a similar fashion as on YOJOE, insert quantities, and a place where I can update the complete/incomplete status of the figure and specify what it's missing. It would have to be something that I can print and carry around with me.
I think it's the simplest and most logical way.
For now, I think I'm going to seperate the figures in two bins: one for the complete and another for the incomplete. When I get a chance at classifying them, I'll do it. This is going to take forever, but maybe that's part of the fun of it. What do you guys think of this quick draft?
-
I only have about 200 figures that are loose and I keep them in the Ziploc Snack bags. I put a post-it note inside the bag to say what is missing other wise it is complete. I have to figure something out with the file cards now, do you keep the international file cards with the english ones or keep them separate?

That's simple, I never thought of doing that. I will do that, thanks Bandanov.

For now all my filecards are mixed up. I will place them by year. I don't even have any international filecards that are cut out except for the easier to find that are still mint on card: the chinese and indian cards.

33 years old and not able to find a storing solution by himself.. the storage question is probably the most important thing when you collect!
Here's my solution:
1. Figures are in 3'' x 5'' mini ziploc bags
2. Another separate 3'' x 5'' mini ziploc bag for accessories (if the figure has a single pistol or an helmet only, I put it in a 2'' x 3'' bag)
3. Then I put these 2 bags in a 6'' x 7'' Ziploc bag (for the freezer, the smallest ones, they protect against light and air)
Yeah, it's a lot of plastic bags, I know.. but I don't want my figure to be in contact with their accessories..
I keep the filecards in a cardboard box for now but I think I will borrow Snakes idea and put them in smaller plastic cases (see the filecards storage thread) Btw thx to Snakes for the idea.. A binder w. plastic sleeves is a great idea too!
Well, hope that helps someone..

Hehe, good humour from you is never in shortage and always welcome El Shark ;D Si Si! Yes, I'm getting old what do you want. Okay the Latin will drop the accent. At 40, I'll be asking you all how to take them out of their little plastic prisons :P
I think I'll go with the one ziplock bag for the figure and the accessories idea for now. Otherwise it'll a load of plastic bags like you said. I don't mind the figure swimming with its other toys but if I see that's not the best, I have your advice to lean on.

Here's an exemple of my master list.. it's an Excel file with all my haves..
I think it's probably the BEST thing to do when you collect..

That is AWESOME. What does "M-A" stand for?

Mail-away.. oh and it's a work in progress btw..

Cool excel list, you can also add filters(dropdowns) to the columns so you can just view certain subteams or years ect.
-
Hey 5h4rK what are all the columns in your excel sheet. I would like to make my own version. I also like NeoDragonKnight's idea of the drop down filters to make searching easier.

My current method of Joe storage is vehicles in bins, parts removed, bagged, labeled, and laid on top of the vehicles just under the lid when the bin's full. For the figures (25th style), they're all stuffed in one Ziploc with their accessories in another, and they have their own bin. One day I'm going to bag them with their accessories individually, but that will take a lot of time...and Ziploc stock should take a big jump when I do!
I know your pain, LJ. You guys have seen just a fraction of my collection in my reviews, and I live in a freaking one bedroom apartment! Thank GOD it has an extra walk-in closet (one closet for clothes, one for Joes
). One day I'll have to take a pic of my closet just to show how stuffed full it is.
LJ, it would take even longer, but I'll tell you my method of Transformers storage too. I've got around 100+ Transformers, and considering that especially the early ones (with real metal) can get chipped up, I wrap them individually in bubble wrap, label them, put their accessories in a Ziploc snack bag, tape THAT to the bubblewrapped Transformer, and then carefully put them in a bin. Time consuming and expensive with the bubble wrap, but a LOT better than chipped Transformers.

Beware the plastic baggies LJ.
When I moved, my stuff was packed up for about 2 months. My PURE white Storm Shadow turned yellow on the legs because of the toxins in the baggie.
It may not happen with yours - but beware.

Ive heard of people using tackle boxes and tool boxes where the segments hold figures almost perfectly, sort of like the old style figure carrying cases they use to sell.

That is great if you have a few figures loose. But when you have a few hundred... that is a lot of tackle boxes.
-
I also use an Excel spreadsheet where each fig has is line like avery accessory for this fig. So, if you are missing some accessory (or you have double) you can see it very easily. But, Since I'm a vintage collector, I mostly have vintage entries.
I also have filter included so you can filter by year, fig, etc. I don't know how to share this workbook, so I will send it to you by email when I come back home.

Tackle boxes are great for accessories and smaller figures such as Minimates and Lego minifigures. For Joes, I don't know - you'd need a lot of boxes (and big boxes, too) to conveniently store them.

Thanks Martin. That's very kind of you. With family obligations and a lot of cleaning to do around the house other than storing the Joes away, this sure will assist me very well in classifying my figures.
But seriously, I think the ideal way to protect them and enjoy them at the same time would be to display them all in two or three IKEA showcases. I will certainly do this when I have the space but for now, it looks like it's going to be the rubbermaid container with the figures individually bagged, because individually putting them in plastic cases will take lots of room and turn out perhaps less practical when you have 600+ figures. As for white figures, I unconsciously put Storm Shadow v.1 in a small protech case. Looks like I'm going to have to do the same with Iceberg, Blizzard, whoever has white plastic parts. I'm also filling up three bins: 1 with ARAH (vintage) complete figures, 1 with incomplete figures, 1 with newer complete figures (including TRAHC, 25th, ROC). This should make it easy to pull out the figures and fill in the excel sheet as quick as I can.
Thanks again guys.

Soon I'll have to follow that route since we're moving next spring, so this thread is very useful for me too.

If you're looking for display cases, Ikea has these great ones called Detolf: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/10011055 (http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/10011055)
Put some of those three-tiered rises from SmallJoes in there and you're set!

Yes - those are the ones I was referring to. I alrady have one of these, and yes they are great for their value!
-
I have two of those for my 12" GI Joes and they're great.
I'll probably get more to keep the little Joes dust free.

Don't forget to wave your hand in front of her eyes when you tell her: "We don't need to approve these shelves. They are approved".
-
These are the shelves you're looking for. Move along.
-
Someone let me know when those go on sale....
-
They don't go on sale.
They WERE prices at 119.00 at one point. Then they dropped to 109, then $99.00
This is the lowest they have ever been, and I highly doubt they'll go any lower. I own three, and picked up two for the convention to use.
Hands down these are awesome.
The best cases for showcasing loose Joes was the BERTBY cases.
They cost $159.00 and would hold 290 CDs, 140 DVDs or 70 videos.
Done correctly, you can get at least 20 figures to a shelf, and about 200 figures in an entire unit.
Sadly, I think IKEA has discontinued them.
-
I advise to keep file cards stored away from figures.
Reason being is I am not sure how the pigments from the cards would react to older figures. I know that back torso of Cutter, which was stored in a sandwich bag with the filecard from a boxed Whale I bought at BHT years ago, become later discoloured. Not sure if this was a one off.
-
I have one of those display cases too. I use it for my large toys and statues. I like to display my 3 3/4 in battles so I dont display on those, if they were slightly wider I would but they are fantastic still.

The Viper Pilot and Clutch and no more on my want list for awhile guys... I like that list because I can see what I am missing, what I have in duplicate, what I have for trade, etc.

I will stop bugging everyone with my Excel, but YoJoe has a list of vehicles (not all the individual part), but at least all the vehicle until 2003. So I fixed some mistake and include it into my Excel on a new sheet. Just in case it may help some people!
