Title: Canadian filecard question
Post by: martin-montreal on June 07, 2011, 11:11:32 PM
Hello everyone!

I got a question and I don't know the answer (but because I'm curious), I'm now interested to know more about it myself! Here it is:

Quote
I recently read a post that stated that some of the Canadian filecards (vintage I assume) were written in English only... Is that correct? I have only found Canadian filecards that are both English/French. The only thing I can think of is maybe some of the mail aways might have been English only... Can you shed any light on that?
[/i]

Anyone can help? Thanks!

Martin

The 83 Cobra Commander has both languages on the file card.

The 82 Snakes Eyes has both too...

As far as I can tell all the filecards from 1982-1994 were English/French, even the mail-away 1982 & 1984 Cobra Commander, 1984 Duke, Steel Brigade figures, six-driver figure set and the Original team 10 figure set.
I don't know whether Starduster, Ninja Vipers or any 90's mail-away got an English/French filecard (I've never paid close attention to them, though).
However, I do know that sometimes you could get US packaged items on the shelves (Toys R Us mostly) and thats where some confusion might be taking place.

The Original team 10 figure set that I ordered back in 1986 came with US English only filecards. Subsequent sets that I ordered a few months later came with NO filecards (just the figure/weapons in baggie).

Whoops!  I may be wrong about the Original Team 10 figure set, since I can only find Major Bludd and Cobra Officer's filecards in English/French but none of the other 8.

I also found this:

The other thing to look out for with Canadian Joes is the file cards. While some are identical to US versions, others are printed in English and French, and yet others are English-only variations unique to Canada. I have two pretty unique Canadian file cards in my collection....one is for Spirit V1 (the file card lists his code-name as "Shaman") and the other is for Scarlett V1 (the picture depicts Cover Girl). I have also heard that some Canadian file cards changed the place of birth of the character to a Canadian city.

From my research, the Covergirl filecard pic only appears on the 1984 32 back version of the Canadian Scarlett (I've seen 11 backs and 20 backs, but they have the normal Scarlett pic).

So my question was... are they all bilingual? So the answer is yes. Even for Spirit (Shaman) and Scarlett (Cover girl) both filecards are bilingual.

They are different from the US because:
1- They are bilingual
2-  :hasbro:

Here's another variant: the Cobra Officer starts off with a silver emblem (1982 & 1983 cards) then gets changed to a red emblem in 1984 (despite the front card art remaining the same) and finally gets changed back to silver for the 1986 mail-away!

Wow, this is cool!

We really should start a wiki for canadian exclusives and variants!

Wow. Who would've known we had more variants than we tought in our own Canadian ARAH joe toy line.

It's really a good thing that I never gave away my own filecards unless I had them in double. I put all mine in a black box so that I may forget them over time. Now comes the fun part: finding out what small treasures I might find in there  :)
