I think part of Brian's story about "testing the flow of information" was given because in past years we have seen the convention figures from China via Ebay and I believe it was last year that he approached the guys who run Joe related message boards and ask that they not post these images before he released the information on the Master Collector board.
I've followed a few on line debates about the pros and cons of being a member to the Master Collector group and one of the pros for being a member is that in the past members got to see the images of the upcoming convention figures before non-members. This year that doesn't seem to be the case as the images can be accessed via the MC landing page by everyone and now this latest stunt with the comic add.
Whatever the case, I find it hard to believe he would test the flow of information with one of the last few surprises he planned to share on line before the convention via comic. If anything, he should have used one of the figures from the 15 pack rather than one of the bonus sets. It's not logical to use these figures as a test. That and based on how often master collector items are delayed due to whichever reason given for a problem at the factory, I find it highly suspect he could have gotten this add over to Devils Due comics last minute, which would mean he's had this layout for a few months now. Given the delay on this years member figure for example and how it was shown a few weeks before the joining deadline, they are still having problems getting stock on time (Operation MOTH was suppose to be out the first quarter of this year, now should be shipping early June).
In a nut shell, I suspect that the art graphics for all these figures were created a while ago, but due to the figures arriving later than expected from the factories, the preview of all the figures was pushed back and during this time I suspect Brian overlooked he had already submitted an add with Devils Due, showing the art we have seen.
I have no proof of any of this, but this makes more sense than testing the flow of information with the last on line surprise for a very small but dedicated market.
Has anyone ever heard him say oops yet? I'm a fan of the MC group and usually defend them, but I can't recall Brian ever saying "Yeah, that was a bit of a screw up". It's not a big deal to make a mistake, but just because it's a toy doesn't mean you should treat us like kids.
Anyhow, that ends my rant.
