How to ruin a good 80's show... with language dubbing!
« on: October 20, 2011, 04:27:28 PM »

Okay, this is something that I found on Youtube that reminded me of my favorite 80's shows that got poorly dubbed... in french! Click on the video to see or hear for yourself how bad they can completely mess up a good show. I mean, what were the voice actors thinking???

I'm sure some of you will say that you won't understand a word if the video is in french, but trust me when I say this: you don't need to to realize how bad of a job they did on this one.

Transformers G1 fans, watch at your own risk LOL:

That's the difference between the translation in France (your link) and in Quebec:

The voice in Quebec were just normal voice. In France, I don't know why, they made angry voice (Transformers and GI Joe). I can't listen it when it's made in France, I feel it is aggressive.

Yep. Shows dubbed in Quebec somewhat sounded right for just about anything dubbed in french.

Interesting fact to retain is that the Return of Optimus Prime episode that was aired here in Quebec back in the good (?) old days, was the exact same annoying yet awkwardly funny version from France (from my link). A strange twist of fate: out of all the TF episodes that I taped when the show was giving on TVA, the very angry and annoying Retour d'Optimus Prime is the only that I still have.

If you listen carefully to the Transformers' voices in that clip, they were also the same voices of the Smurfs that aired here in Quebec. The voice in french of Jessica Morgan is the same voice of the Smurfette, and Optimus Prime's voice in french is the same one as "schtroumpf grognon" (angry smurf)... and yes that was one agressive voice too come to think of it.

i'm not that big on the Transformers toon, tbh, it wasn't shown much over here on TV. and my parents didn't buy me the videos, aside from The Movie, so i have no particular attachment to it and when i recently watched a mate's copies whilst babysitting his kid, i thought it was absolutely dire.

the UK comics are FAR superior...

Look at the bright side: at least you could potentially dance to japanese cartoon intro's...

I like that TF japanese intro, it is what japanese were best known for afterall (beeing a fan of original anime shows) and I will always consider it as legitimate as the american intro of Transformers.

Let's not forget that the guy who voiced Optimus Prime in Quebec now voices Homer Simpson.

Here's a little counter example to show that dubbed versions can sometimes surpass or be a little more ambitious than their original counterparts, in their one way:

Original intro of Go-bots:
