I have to agree, Houston has had a tough time with winning sports championships. But the Houston Dynamo of MLS has won championships recently, even though I considered the MLS to be minor league soccer in comparison to European leagues.
And if Michael Jordan didn't decide to retire and play baseball for two years, I don't think the Rockets would have won those two championships.
If run down the teams I follow:
MLB: Toronto Blue Jays: Won two World Series in my life time. In 2009, the Blue Jays are average at best. The problem is that they are stuck in a division with the Yankees and Red Soxs. MLB needs a salary cap as I am sick and tired of the Yankees buying players and ruining small market teams.
NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers: Won four Super Bowls in my life time and lost one to the Cowgirls (that one still ticks me off). The first two don't count as I was 3 and 4 years old. Can't complain with the ride I have had with the Steelers. Although yesterdays lost to the Bungals was a real kick in the nuts in terms of repeating this year.
CFL: Toronto Argonauts: 5 Grey cup wins and 7 Grey appearances in total in my lifetime. Just like all the Toronto sports team, the Argos just suck right now in 2009.
NBA: Toronto Raptors: 0 is the number of championships won. This team has been basically a joke. Players like Stoudamire, McGrady and Carter could not wait to get out of here. Yes, Toronto is cold in the winter compared to the ghetto but come on. At least with the recent influx of international players, maybe, just maybe this team will become stable down the road. In 2009, the Raptors have re-loaded their team after a crappy 2008 season.
NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs: 0 is number of Stanley Cups they have won in my life time. Like what other Leaf fans have mentioned, the ownership is biggest reason why this team spins it's wheels, all thanks to the biggest pile of shit named Harold Ballard. He started this mess. Other owners tried to win by their philosophy was flawed. They though by just getting into the playoffs (like the 7 or 8 seed), you have shot a winning the cup. Please. You need a top 4 team to have real shot. In 2009, the Leafs are re-building and it's about time.
The only few highlights was that the Leafs were oh so so close in 1993. But that freaking ice chicken called Wayne Gretzky and his high stick, that was witnessed by the ref and not called, cost the Leafs a shot of reaching the finals. And there was another year that the Leafs had the Devils on the ropes until Tie Dummy cheap shotted a Devils player. Momentum swung towards the Devils after that.
At least I watched two Stanley Cup victory runs by Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the early 1990s. Mario has and always will be my favorite. Hence, I follow the Penguins as well, including to this day as Mario now owns the team.
Other: Euro Cup 2004: Greece wins it all. I was at the Joe convention in Orlando went they won it all. I realized down there that ESPN not the world wide leader in sports, like they claim. Losers couldn't show one F@*&^ing clip of the game.
Overall, Toronto is quickly getting the name city of losers. This crap has to stop.
